Getting Started with OPC UA: The Standard for Industrial Information Exchange
In today's digital economy, industries must efficiently exchange operational data to improve efficiency and maximize profits. Historically, exchanging this data across different systems was challenging due to unique, proprietary interfaces creating isolated data pockets. OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) is a universal and open communication standard that not only facilitates secure and efficient data exchange among devices and systems in industrial operations but also and this data with IT systems. Paving the way for more connected, automated and intelligent systems, often called Industry 4.0.
This presentation will introduce OPC UA and its mission. We'll explain its information model, which standardizes complex industrial system representations, and delve into OPC UA Companion Specifications for industry-specific information representation. Further, we’ll describe the mapping of abstract OPC UA specifications to concrete technologies, focusing on data encoding, transportation, and security.
This presentation will highlight OPC UA's role in Field-Level Communication and explore its data integration patterns, namely OPC UA Client-Server and OPC UA PubSub for IIoT Connectivity. In addition, we'll showcase open-source projects and tools for developers to start building OPC UA applications. Lastly, to portray OPC UA’s applicability in Industrial IoT, we’ll explore an OPC UA-based Reference Architecture for Smart Manufacturing.
